Monumental Inscription

Here lies
the body of MICHAEL DARDIS Efqr
who departed this life on Thurfday
the 23 day of Febry 1797; aged 62 years

He was born in Galway in the Kingdom of Ireland
and ferved as Surgeon on board the Veftal
Capt. SAMUEL HOOD (now Lord HOOD)
when fhe engaged and took the Bellona
a French Frigate of fuperior force
after a fevere and bloody conflict
upon which occafion
the following epigram was written
In vain Bellona mounts the Gallic Gun
to try the honor of the Britifh Nun
chafte as fhe lived fo bravely fhall expire
theres no extinguifhing the Veftal Fire
He afterwards fettled in this Ifland
where he practised Physic
for upwards of thirty years
with credit and reputation
His character is comprifed in a few words
He was charitable to the poor
Hospitable to strangers and the
Friend of Mankind in general
He left an only daughter
married to WILLIAM FURLONGE junior Efqre
who placed this humble stone here
